Giovanna Steinhaus, M.S., M.A. will be entering her fourth year of Marywood University's Psy.D. program this upcoming fall semester. She received her undergraduate degree in Psychology and Spanish from Binghamton University and went on to obtain a Master of Science in Criminology from the University of Pennsylvania. Currently, she is the campus representative for the American Psychology-Law Society (Division 41) for Marywood University. Giovanna’s previous clinical experiences have been in varying settings such as community mental health centers, forensic sites (county jail, outpatient sexual offender treatment facility, mental health court/forensic services unit), as well as a traumatic brain injury residential facility. Her prior research experiences encompassed topics such as marriage and family studies, attendance issues in community mental health, neurocriminology, and the effects of childhood drunkenness. She currently is in the data collection phase of her dissertation (which is exploring childhood trauma, substance use, and criminality) and will be applying for pre-doctoral internships this year.

Finding Practicum & Internship Sites in a Small Town

Some graduate programs afford students the opportunity to spend their summers back home as opposed to requiring summer courses. Online graduate programs sometimes require students to locate their own training opportunities wherever they are located.

For students coming from larger towns and cities, this can be a promising option. However, for other students like myself, home has more wildlife than people.

After going through the process of finding summer practicum and internship positions in my small hometown multiple times, I have learned some approaches that have aided me in this process despite my initial hesitation.
