Jonathan Ly earned his BA in Psychology from UC Santa Barbara, and he is currently a PsyD student at Alliant International University, Los Angeles. He is working at Southern Utah University for his internship year. A former emergency medical technician, his research interests lie in the barriers to help-seeking behavior. A combination of research, his experiences as an EMT, and doctoral training has informed his research with how personal and social issues moderate comfort with seeking psychological services. He enjoys working with college and university students in order to collaborate with adults in their process of personal acceptance, goal setting, and resilience to life's stressors. Jonathan is a firm advocate for the idea that while no clients ever get to choose a life free from distress, effective therapy can provide clients with the means to learn more about themselves and cultivate strength in the face of hardship.

As you and your cohort settle into practicum, you will hear at some point about the intake process, specifically how different sites may have different ways of approaching an intake. Department of Mental Health sites in your county may have an intake form with questions that go on for several pages. For example, the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health Adult Intake form has nine sections, with subsection questions for each one!
However, if you find yourself in a site that allows you freedom to conduct a semi-structured intake, it may still be challenging to find the balance between having an organic session with the client while obtaining relevant information that can inform your treatment plan.
